BETWEEN PARADISE AND THE APOCALYPSE

By Sergio Granillo

Live broadcasting of war battles, liners flying under alert of emergency landing, reporters carried away by hurricanes during live transmissions, interviews to hostages of outraged crowds before they were burned to death; indictments by media against paroled individuals… On the 21st Century, Mass Media tend to present the most dramatic scenes that people ever imagined to be able to see at their homes through their TV sets.

But just in the past few weeks, the news reported by media seems like a sort of sequence in an apocalyptic scenario, it’s like the 80’s film “The Apocalypse now!”

In spite of the recent questionings of its objectivity, the American news corporation CNN bears yet a powerful influence on the public opinion. Recently, they carried out a research about the real possibilities of the world facing an Apocalypse, regarding the series of natural disasters, hurricanes and earthquakes, mainly.

Priests, theologians, weather specialists and scientists were interviewed: - Are we witnessing signals of the end of the world, as the Bible depict it?

This report came after the series of extraordinary and numerous events, previously reported each by one by the same CNN, all the catastrophe damaging the Southern areas of the United States, hit by hurricanes, Katrina, Wilma and Rita; later, the devastating earthquake (more than 70 thousand people killed) in Afghanistan, India and Pakistan; not to mention the previous Tsunami in South Asia.

In deed, what is real is that international humanitarian groups are quite busy, short of further resources, due to an unprecedented concurrence of situations along the planet. Bank accounts keep open just changing the new disaster relief fund in turn. News programs are enhancing their daily rating indexes, thanks to the covering of the most dramatic situations all around the world, transmitting live, weather from cell phone cameras or from the International Space Station and all the satellites surrounding the globe.

In the middle of this “chaos”, a scientific study seems overlooked, in stead of be taken into consideration…

The Human Security Centre of the University of British Columbia states that the world is a most safe place and it is living the most pacific moments in History, according to a study presented publicly last October 18th.

After a deep investigation carried on under the sponsor of Canada, Sweden, Norway, UK and Switzerland, researchers concluded that today, the world lives better conditions than in the past. First of all, from 1992 up to date the number of armed conflicts has dropped 40%, and in the ones that remain the number of victims has decreased as well.

Genocides due to religious, ethnic or political reasons have reduced in 80% from 1988 to 2001; not to mention the World War II Jewish Holocaust. The number of political refugees in the world has decreased in 45%, comparing years 1992 to 2003. The research evaluates the terrorism as a real growing international threat, that nevertheless can not be compared to the armed conflicts of the past…

An important fact for this result in the decrease of armed conflicts in the world is the end of the “Cold War” between the Soviet Union and the United States, which actually also finished the continuous financing of rebellions in Third World countries, sponsored by the governments of rich countries for political and economical purposes. Even that wars remain, totaling 60, they are using lighter weaponry compared with the ones in the past.

So, are we living the Apocalypse or what?

According to the referred study, by the statistical figures regarding death tolls due to wars and genocides have decreased, nonetheless the recent worries come because of natural disasters, but for them, scientist have an explanation too:

Precisely in the interviews presented on CNN, experts consider the existence of 2 elements influencing in such natural disasters; one related to the changes of the environment produced by pollution and over exploitation of natural resources, de called global warming. Secondly, a demographic phenomenon, by which, population growth has invaded geographical regions that are not suitable to sustain human establishments and increasing their vulnerability to natural disasters.

I would add another element, the “global village”, foreseen by the Canadian expert in Communication Theories, Marshal McLuhan; who predicted how technology and mass media have increased the fluxes of communication among all the countries, creating this sense of “global village”, feeling closer things that happen far away and of which we barely knew in the past; even more, when they are broadcasted life thanks to the use of satellite. That means that we are more conscious about what happens globally, whatever it can bring along.

And also, journalism bids more and more for sensationalism and fatalistic stories; the capacity to get amazed is getting over; readers and audiences of TV and movies demand more drama, more sadism, more violence and more adrenaline. We shall not forget that “news” are no more than other merchandises in the global market place, news programs compete to gain audiences, no wondering psychological or social consequences.

The bottom line is that people purchases all that crap, disguised as the real thing, which can actually trigger real hells…
