WHERE HAVE THE DREAMS GONE?

By Sergio Granillo

I emigrated to make my dream come true, to study my career in the Tec de Monterrey Campus Querétaro’ (the most prestigious private university in Mexico); I left friends and part of my family in Mexico City –where I was born and lived for 18 years. So, I went to live to a small town 2 hours to the north of Mexico City, Querétaro, 1985 –the year of the big earthquake that killed thousands.

The world was bipolar, Capitalists versus Communist. People didn’t have computers at home, Internet didn’t exist yet, no cell phones, no globalization, no exchange of students with foreign universities…

In Mexico, there was only one political party, never changed, unthinkable to have any option; entertainment was dominated by only one company as well, Televisa, and because of that, everybody who studied Communications –not the engineering, had in focus to get in to that company to succeed and be famous.

I enjoyed the time in the classroom, but not quite much my classmates; nonetheless, at the end of every single day, I run to the rear of the campus, beyond the sport fields, to the theatre plays’ or musical groups’ rehearsals. It was a bunch of crazy people, just like me, full of dreams, illusions and a lot of creative energy. They became my family and cultural activities, my passion.

Most of the people in that big family were gifted artists, who transcended time and location, becoming professional artists, actors, singers and playwrights. Back in that time, we traveled to many cities in Central and Northeast Mexico, representing our Campus Querétaro.

When I think of that time in my life, inspiring dawns come to my mind, myself surrounded of many good friends, together we explored the magic of Arts, we all worked hard in the classrooms, but our deepest goal was the opening night of a new play or a new musical repertoire; all the preparations for that night show and the people’s applause afterward, we all went for bohemian parties.

That time seems to me like a magical place in time, no past, no future, just the intensity and joy of the moment, no fights, no envies, no mischievous gossips nor grudges; if anybody in our group got an outstanding performance on stage, we all admired him/her, and we felt motivated; it was amazing to feel the immediate response from the audience, laughing or crying… it was a real team work!

All of these means to me my university -called in a familiar manner ‘Tec’ for Tecnológico de Monterrey. One year ago (2005), before moving to Canada, I paid a visit to my university to request some documents, I was surprised when a couple of persons from the staff remembered of me, and still keep in their memories that ‘golden time’ of our Campus, after 15 years.

It was thanks to Adrian, a good friend of that time, who introduced me to an alumni association based in Toronto, he pushed me to come for a scouting three years ago (2003), I finally decided to start the process to obtain a Residence Visa and moving to Canada.

Although, this alumni association is part of my university, I never expected to live again that “golden time” back in Querétaro in 1985, but at least I aimed to finding some leads, orientation, moral support in this new start of my life; which means a dream come true, come to live to Canada.

I felt disappointed because some people from my university, same in Mexico and here, when they first meet you or see you again, they always make the same questions: where are you working at, how much do you earn, did you already buy the newest car, where are you living… all that for them means the measure of success, happiness, and the real value of a person.

Myself, I am very proud of my professional achievements, since I was a student, always got the highest degrees, and in my career, got to occupy high positions in the government; my daily work involved talking in front of microphones and cameras, see my name written on national newspapers.

When I came to Canada, though, I realized that no document, the best resume or the most amazing list of skills and experience can beat the ruthless “Canadian Experience” barrier. And if you look for some help in other people from your country and your university, more often it becomes a barrier than a bridge…

As an immigrant, I do believe that it is more important to a professional attitude rather than a career, you must show maturity, humbleness, and demonstrate in facts who you are, far beyond of what your resume can say about you.

This process of job search in Canada has brought to my mind the attitude that I learned on stage performing… in that ‘golden time’. Here it is about you all by yourself and the circumstances around you; nobody knows you or has heart about your university, many people even find hard how to identifying a Mexican.

To open doors and be able to demonstrate your professional skills, first you must show what kind of human being you are, how confident you are of your skills and knowledge, how you overcome the challenges and what is your attitude in doing so. It is like making an audition in front of a lot of unknown people; you are shivering and sweating, scared but excited trying to please the audience, getting applause.

Each emigrant has a different history, a recipe of his own and a unique measure of success. I came to Canada to make my dream come true, and I am working on that. I look backwards and feel satisfaction for what I did in the past, I keep bonds with my beloved ones, but step firmly on the ground, living today, allowing myself to have dreams, again, and enjoying every step of the way.
